Day of mourning

The first bodies of the people that have died in last week’s horrible airplane crash are arriving in the Netherlands today. It’s a national day of mourning. Let’s play the blame game on another day.

Two songs come to mind to share with you all on this day.

The first one is quite an obvious one but the lyrics are just so strong, I can’t think of a better way to express today’s atmosphere. So here it is, Sting’s Fragile, this time in the live version with Stevie Wonder to bring it home.

Perhaps this final act was meant
To clinch a lifetime’s argument
That nothing comes from violence and nothing ever could
For all those born beneath an angry star
Lest we forget how fragile we are

And then there is Mercedes Sosa, who always touches my heart with whatever she sings. It’s a song about loss, about heartache and about missing someone, but sung with a voice that hugs you like a loving mother.
